The business was established in 1987 when Charles Steevenson opened a small retail shop in the heart of Tavistock. In 2003, he incorporated the business, moved to Plymouth Road Industrial Estate and became a wine importer and premium supplier to the licensed trade. Before long, larger premises were required, and the business now occupies two warehouse units at the end of the same industrial estate.
Where it all started...
Charles opened his original Wine Shop in Russell Street.
Charles Steevenson Wines became incorporated.
The business name changed to Steevenson Wines Ltd.
Mike bought the business and changed the name to Sovereign Wines Ltd.
Still doing what we do best!
When the time came to retire it was only natural for Charles to sell the business to his right-hand man and Operations Manager of many years, Michael McGarry. Mike became the owner on 1st July 2020, renaming the company Sovereign Wines to ensure it remains distinct from businesses run by Charles’s son Liam Steevenson (Master of Wine). In fact, Mike and Liam went to school together, so it really is a company where everyone knows everyone else very well indeed! Mike is brimming with ideas and enthusiasm, and with an extensive background in hospitality, he ensures that his customers come first.
